Tall Oil Pitch, often known as “pitch,” is a byproduct of the wood pulping process, particularly in the pulp and paper sector. Tall oil is created from it, which is a byproduct of the kraft pulping process, which separates cellulose fibers from lignin in wood. While the word “pitch” may conjure up ideas of petroleum-based products, Tall Oil Pitch is a bio-based product with distinct qualities and an expanding list of applications.
Tall Oil Pitch has a thick, sticky consistency and is often black or dark brown in appearance. It is made up of a complex blend of organic molecules such as rosin acids, fatty acids, and neutral chemicals. This composition varies based on the source of the tall oil and the pulping procedure utilized. Tall Oil Pitch is notable for its high softening point and resistance to temperature variations.
Tall Oil Pitch was traditionally seen as a waste product of the pulp and paper industry, and it was either discarded or employed in lower-value applications. However, there has been an increasing acknowledgement of its potential as a valuable and sustainable resource in recent years. It is suitable for applications requiring stability and endurance, such as road building and industrial processes, due to its key properties.
